Colour
Me Happy:

A celebration of 50 states of happiness through colour, words & symbolism
Solo Art Exhibition by Anita Revel :: Margaret River

When Julia Roberts exclaimed “Well, colour me happy!” in the movie, Pretty Woman, it got me wondering what happiness would look like if expressed in colour. So I delved into dozens of colour therapy theories and scientific studies of how colour affects mood. I sat various colours next to each other to evoke emotion — from happiness and playfulness to melancholy and mystery, eventually intuiting 50 colour combinations that defined 50 states of happiness.

I then overlaid these feelings with pattern that represents our social fabric — look beyond the rules and structure to find true feelings lurking beneath. Behind the face we present to the world, we are beings exploding with a palette of feelings as rich and vast as the entire colour spectrum.

Which totem animal helps us see beyond face value? Owl does. Owl energy helps you see that which is not obvious — it lets you see into another dimension, so that which was in darkness, becomes now crystal clear.

The owl’s piercing gaze cuts through the haze and the mystery, focusing on the prize — the deep and undeniable truth within. The original painting “Colour Me Happy” inspired the rest of the collection: 50 hand-painted prints featuring colour, states of happiness, and Owl.

The hand-painted prints are a result of layering give lino prints, and hand-painting the owls as the final layer. The repeated motifs throughout create a sense of rhythm and movement that is both healing and stimulating at the same time.

I also channelled an affirmation to describe what it feels like to be in each state of happiness, which is hand-written on the back of each piece in this collection.

It is my wish for you that you will be attracted to a particular colour combination, or its associated state of happiness, then be inspired by the image to bring that energy into your life each day.

All prints come on a mat ready to frame and are $110 each. There are 10 pieces that have been framed already, which are $150.

Opening Speech by Jenni Doherty

Colour Me Happy… What could be a more delightful premise for a body of work?

As an artist, one of the hardest parts of the job can be finding what it is you with to say, and if not that, then how to say it?

There are just so many parts of us that need expressing. Narrowing it down and developing the concept out of all the possibilities can be tricky. Especially along with all the yummy art processes and colours to choose from.

Anita has always expressed herself so well in so many different ways, and this exhibition is a little window into the complex, yet generous way she shares herself with us.

I was asked to open this show because of a long past play and learning with lino. It is one of the enduring elements in my work.

Everything about lino printing, is delightful. The cutting is repetitive and forgiving. Small mistakes are not revealed in the final print due to the expressive nature of the cutting. You can go outside the line without anything dreadful happening or having much effect on the finished product. It is a lesson in going with the flow, learning what really matters, and losing yourself in the act.

It also has all that time of cutting to build excitement and develop the ideas further. To anticipate and dream.

The printing of the block for the first time is always a surprise. The inking, the laying on the paper, but more than that, the first time you lift the block to reveal what it is you have created, is truly exciting.

I use the lino in my work as a small act of selfishness, just because everything about creating it brings me joy.

Printmaking is a way of reproducing an image quickly and reliably. The idea of repetition and pattern is the every thing in my work. Our daily lives are full of it, and we have to embrace new elements regularly to stay alive and connected to others, yet keep the patterns of our own lives close but not closed. So for me, borrowing pattern from history, new and old, adapting elements and combining them differently, using old with a new, allowing them to work together really is just a small version of life on canvas.

The idea that we all have secret sides and show only what feels safe to the world is also one close to my heart. Using pattern underneath my images, sometimes as barely there texture, alludes to the secrets. Not all must be revealed, a hint still gives energy to work but retains some mystery.

A girl must have some of the mystery…

The owl for me is also a thing of wonder. Those all seeing eyes, the quiet watchfulness and only coming out when it is dark. We have a lot of them on our place and one that seems to live on the gatepost and flys a welcome home t one late at nights. They sing in the dark quiet of the night in haunting ways, and occasionally visit the studio balcony for a moment of wonder to me.

Having the discipline to be moved by an idea such as the premise for this work, and then see it through is much harder than you would imagine. Not because the idea is not good, but because there are soon many places you can go from once concept and often there is a lot of repetitive work, I can’t wait to start, I want to see how it is going to be. So putting all else aside, in I jump. Then when it comes together, such a feeling of relief and wonder that I have managed.

After the honeymoon is over and 200 hours into the project, I do have moments of questioning whose idea it was after all! Yet completion brings another joy. It is much like birthing your first child. A lot of hard work and then total love and wonder. It is why we keep on doing it. There is always another baby to come from the first, and then the next. The time it takes to execute a body of work, can if you listen, bring forth many other great ways of saying what need to say.

The act of having an exhibition is a brave one. It is akin to hanging yourself naked on the wall. All that energy and focus out there for the world to judge, enjoy, love or not.

Creative energy does need feeding, playing inside an idea and taking it as far as you can is a great stretch for the mind and the creative energy. It has been given room to explore and grow, in this show. There is often at the end of such an effort a sort of quiet exhaustion and wondering about what is next.

To use some of Anita’s own words, I have no doubt that whatever the “next” is, it will be …
